Augur Review (2026)

★ 3.4 / 5  |  142 reader reviews

The original decentralized prediction market. Historically pioneering, largely dormant in 2026.

Heads up: Augur is effectively dormant as of 2026. We include this review for historical context only. Do not use the platform for active markets without independently verifying current liquidity and oracle status.
Our verdict: Augur invented the category. The v2 launch in 2020 was one of the earliest mature decentralized PM deployments, and the protocol’s oracle design influenced most of what followed. Usage has collapsed since 2022 and is effectively dormant in 2026. Included here for historical completeness and in case of a future revival.

Overview

Augur launched in 2018 as the first broadly usable decentralized prediction market protocol. Augur v2 shipped in 2020 with major improvements to oracle reliability and gas efficiency. At its peak Augur processed tens of millions of dollars in matched bets and was the reference implementation for decentralized PM design.

Usage declined steadily from 2022 onward as Polymarket’s off-chain order book model proved more practical for the political and macro markets that came to define PM volume. By 2026 Augur is effectively dormant: occasional markets still resolve, but new market creation and liquidity are minimal. The REP token remains tradable.

We include this review so readers exploring the history of prediction markets have a factual reference. For active, liquid alternatives see our Polymarket review or the best prediction markets for crypto guide.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Historical significance as the first major decentralized PM
  • Open-source protocol, foundational oracle design
  • Fully non-custodial, trust-minimized
  • REP token remains tradable

Cons

  • Effectively dormant in 2026, minimal active liquidity
  • No meaningful new market creation
  • UI and documentation are legacy and under-maintained
  • Better to use Polymarket or other active protocols for real markets

Frequently asked questions

Is Augur still active?

No. Augur is effectively dormant in 2026. Some markets still resolve, but new market creation and matched volume are minimal. We do not recommend using Augur for active trading without first verifying current liquidity.

Why did Augur decline?

Off-chain order book designs (Polymarket, etc.) proved more practical for the markets that became dominant. Augur’s on-chain architecture was trust-minimizing but imposed gas costs and slower settlement that users would not tolerate.

Can I still trade REP?

REP is listed on a number of centralized and decentralized exchanges. Liquidity is far lower than at its peak but the token is not delisted.

What replaces Augur?

For decentralized PMs with real activity, Polymarket is the clear leader. Zeitgeist and Overtime are also active, with different specializations.

Is Augur v3 in development?

There have been periodic community discussions but no officially shipped v3 as of April 2026.
